PLN #3 The Most Dangerous Game - post and revised

In Richard Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game" the main character, Rainsford is involved in very serious hunting. He and his good friend Whitney are traveling by yacht to hunt in the amazon . Rainsford hears a mysterious shot gun go off so he decides to follow the sound and falls off the yacht to find himself on a strange island. On this island good things do not happen. "You shoot down men?" This quote tells us that the island Rainsford is on is probably not the place he wants to be, and that the general is a bad person who thinks hunting was too simple with animals so he started hunting and killing men. General Zaroff is in control of the island and claims he has never lost playing his game. Confusion swarmed around in my head. Isn't it illegal to kill people? How does he get the men to the island?
"I will not lose my nerve, I will not!" This quote suggests that General Zaroff is a very cocky man who doesn't like to lose. The reader can also tell that the general has his ways of winning and nothing can get in his way.
"You've done well Rainsford." This quote hints to the reader that Rainsford has won the game and defeated the general. As a reader, you could also tell that the general isn't a bad sport about losing, or at least he doesn't show it. The outcome of the story is good for General Zaroff because it will treat him to not be as cocky and think he is better than everyone.
This story makes me very curious. Why do people think they can get away with killing people, no matter what race they are. Everyone in this world is equal, no matter what color their skin is. It also makes me frusterated because the fact that people think they are better than others is just wrong. This story reminded me of Adolf Hitler because he was racist against jews and he killed majority of them because he thought he was better than them. General Zaroff is exactly like him. "The Most Dangerous Game" has a good moral linked onto it: Dont do it to others if you wouldn't want it done to you.

PLN #2 What makes good people do bad things.

In Kaye Gibbons's "Ellen Foster" the main character Ellen, gets abused by her father. This really makes me think about our guiding question, what makes people do bad things? I think about this because Ellen's dad obviously cares somewhat about his daughter because she has a home, and at least a little food to eat. What really shakes me is that even though he is a good person, he still wants to hurt his daughter. Going back to the guiding question, I believe good people do bad things because they are either upset with themselves or they are addicted to whatever the situation is and they can't control it.
I relate this back to my book because Ellen's dad is addicted to alcohol and therefore he acts out violently towards his daughter. I do not think that the dad would be so violent if he didn't have a drinking problem. Taking, that whenever he abuses Ellen he is drunk.
He may be this way because of a childhood situation he had with his father. Maybe his dad abused him and now he is taking his life anger out on his daughter.
I think everyone in this world is a good person, unless they kill another human.
Overall, I don't think Ellen's father can control what goes on behind the walls of their house because he has an addiction and it is affecting everyone around him.

The Glass Castle PLN #1

In Jeannette Wall's The Glass Castle, a family struggles to find a home due to financial issues. This story is very inspiring because it makes me think of how lucky i am to have everything that i have.  There are three kids in this book, and none of them have beds, they sleep in cardboard boxes without any blankets. On top of everything that is happening, the parents do not get along with each other.  The mom is an artist, but no body likes to buy her paintings. The dad, most of the time has a job.  When their dad loses his job, the family is forced to pick up and leave.  In one particular part of the story the parents get into a huge fight, where the dad ends up chasing the mom in the car and trying to run her over.  The father is extremely abusive to the mom and the kids are challenged not to say anything about it.

I am constantly thinking about how this family could come together as one and maybe things wouldn't be as difficult.  If they all got along with one another, they could figure out a plan to be able to work together to be fed and at least a little bit more comfortable. The dad is a good man because he cares about his kids and family, but he doesn't have the money to buy them food and necessities that they need to live a normal life.

I look forward to seeing what will happen in the rest of the book, and to read more books written by Jeannette Wall's

summer reading

This summer I read a fantastic book titled " My Sister's Keeper." It is about a family that has a 16 year old daughter named kate who is diagnosed with cancer. The only way she can survive is for her to have a bone marrow transplant. The doctors say that is only safe if she has a complete donor match. The parents decide to have another child so that when the girl grows older she can give her kidney to kate. But as kate's sister anna gets older, she realized she doesnt want to donate anything else. She is sick of being in the hospitol constantly. Anna then decides to try and sue her parents because she thinks they are forcing her to donate her oregons. Anna then has to make a life changing decision; let her sisters life slip right between her hands, or donate the kidney. Read and find out!
